Things I Learned the Hard Way is a place where women can share life lessons about home, family, friendship and work. The site is only as valuable as its community of readers, who share their experiences with us through comments and essays.

Feel free to ask for some advice or to share a story.

Asking for Advice

If you have a problem, chances are that one of our writers has faced the issue before. Write to us and we’ll try to share our experiences with you. Weather you are trying to figure out how to mend chipped Limoges, or to find the right words of comfort for a friend who has just lost her job, we’ll share with you what we have learned the hard way.

In the next few months we will publish several series of essays on the hard-learned lessons of:
  • Going back to work after kids
  • Avoiding or coping with date rape
  • Asking for and getting a raise
  • Enjoying the holidays
  • Finding clothing that fits

If you have learned a life lesson the hard way on this or any other topic, please submit your story for consideration.

Submission Guidelines

Please follow these guidelines as you write for Hard Way.

Life Lessons

What separates this site from other web communities is our focus on sharing things we have learned the hard way. Please be sure to say explicitly what your life lesson is.

Length

We accept submissions anywhere in length from 50 to 1,000 words.

Voice and Style

Your voice is as important to us as your experience. Be yourself when you write. Keep sentences simple. If you are having trouble getting started, pretend that you are giving advice to your favorite niece or colleague.

We will not publish essays that have appeared in other publications (including your blog). We do not publish every essay we receive.

An unsolicited suggestion: it would be neat to have a little style-switcher with a few alternative interpretations of symbolic femininity. I like this blog a lot, but I don't like pink roses. :)
