Easy Entertaining!

People think I’m crazy, and maybe I am, but I learned the hard way that packing all my hosting activities into a short period of time is a good thing. I save a lot of time, money and aggravation.

This week I am having a barbeque for 20 on Thursday night and a bridal shower luncheon for 30 on Saturday. This may sound like a lot of work—it is—but the advantages of hosting two large events within a day of each other is, for me, the best way to go. I only have to do major house cleaning once (I’ll tidy up after Thursdays’ event on Friday) and I only have to make one shopping trip for groceries, decorations and paper goods.

The flowers that will brighten my house for Thursday’s festivities will still be beautiful on Saturday. This, alone, will save me some bucks. Also there are sure to be left over cans of pop and bottles of water and wine when my guests leave Thursday night. These will be added to for Saturday’s gathering.

I’m grilling chicken and corn Thursday night. I need cooked chicken and grilled corn (off the cob) for my Saturday salad. I’ll be able to grill what I need for both events once. What a time saver!

Over the years I have discovered that fulfilling two or three hosting obligations within days of each event is doable, especially when I serve basically the same menu. (My guests don’t know that I made the same dinner or lunch 24 hours earlier for somebody else!) My most recent menu for dinner guests has been salmon with peach salsa topping (you just throw the salsa on top of the salmon, wrap in foil and bake for 25 minutes); cubed potatoes tossed with onion soup mix and olive oil and baked in the oven and a salad of Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, blue cheese crumbs, thin red onion slices and a balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing. One week I served this same menu three times to different groups of friends who I wanted to entertain. (Since the food was so good, it wasn’t a problem for me or my husband to have this meal multiple times that week!) I got rave reviews on my dinner and the same lovely centerpiece of fresh flowers. A bonus: we got multiple invitations for future dinners at these friends’ homes!

I got this entertaining thing down pat…now! Too bad I didn’t learn my hostess secret years ago. I would have saved a lot of time and effort. Another advantage: I only have to put on my hospitality personality for a few days every once in a while!

I've heard this thought before but don't know if I have the energy to carry it out. We do have a lot of company but I'm not quite as organized as that. ha!
