Know Your Meds!

Over the years I—like you—have heard that the cure can be worse than the disease. With so much information provided on all the new meds advertised on television and in print, it’s amazing that anyone would be willing to try the “cure.” The possible complications of some medicines seem to present a whole new challenge for those looking to ease their particular malady.

Take the “cure” for RLS—that’s Restless Leg Syndrome. (“RLS!” Never knew there was such a condition until recently. Never knew anyone who had it!) Now there’s a cure for this condition…but, horrors, the medicine can lead to a gambling and/or sexual tendencies. Whoa! The medicine may restrain your legs, but does this mean that you run the chance of becoming a street walker or a Las Vegas high roller? Maybe it is better to just learn to live with some leg movements!

And then there’s all those meds for males to assure that they can still have a sex life. You know the pills I’m referring to: the ones that keep the erection erect! According to the ads, these pills may work, but they may also decrease hearing and vision. But then again, maybe some men don’t care what their partner looks like or what their partner says if they can reach their ultimate goal!

Knowing the complications of medicine, whether prescription or over-the-counter, is something all of us should consider before putting anything into our bodies. I learned this the hard way when I was prescribed a steroid for pneumonia. I didn’t read that little piece of paper that came with the medicine…the one that tells you everything about the particular drug. After a few days of taking the medicine I became depressed. A few days later, I was severely depressed. I couldn’t seem to get a grasp on life and couldn’t understand what was happening to me. It wasn’t until a week later—one of the worst weeks in my life—that my doctor helped me figure out it was the steroid doing the emotional damage. He gave me an antidepressant that, thank heavens, worked.

The message here is to that we all have to be knowledgeable about what medicines…or vitamins…or minerals…etc. that we take. Ask the doctor. Read the enclosed brochure or bottle. We can’t just trust that a pill is good for us. It may cure the problem, but…

Being on prednisone for nearly 3 yr., I'm aware of the awful sideffects. But when your kidneys are failing you just do what they tell you.
