The Tiger Lily Lesson

When I was young and dumb and broke—I’m talking about my 20s and, maybe, even beyond—I would take shortcuts to reach my goals. (Come to think of it…I still take some stupid shortcuts!) I learned the hard way, however, that there are times when travelling the long road is the best way to go.

The arrival of summer—finally—has resulted in the grounds around my home being awash in tiger lilies, a favorite flower since childhood. The orange smatterings have not only brightened my gardens, but my outlook. (How can you feel bad with such glorious splendor?) The opening of these flowers’ petals has reminded of a time so long ago.

With the somewhat-limited budget of a just-out-of-college and newly-employed professional, I liked to entertain…a lot. And I liked to do it in splendor. My means certainly didn’t justify the end that I liked to accomplish: wonderful food and beverages and beautiful table arrangements with magnificent floral centerpieces. But I managed. (My credit card statements at that time indicated just how I accomplished my festive and popular dinner parties.)

Easy Entertaining!

People think I’m crazy, and maybe I am, but I learned the hard way that packing all my hosting activities into a short period of time is a good thing. I save a lot of time, money and aggravation.

This week I am having a barbeque for 20 on Thursday night and a bridal shower luncheon for 30 on Saturday. This may sound like a lot of work—it is—but the advantages of hosting two large events within a day of each other is, for me, the best way to go. I only have to do major house cleaning once (I’ll tidy up after Thursdays’ event on Friday) and I only have to make one shopping trip for groceries, decorations and paper goods.

The flowers that will brighten my house for Thursday’s festivities will still be beautiful on Saturday. This, alone, will save me some bucks. Also there are sure to be left over cans of pop and bottles of water and wine when my guests leave Thursday night. These will be added to for Saturday’s gathering.

I’m grilling chicken and corn Thursday night. I need cooked chicken and grilled corn (off the cob) for my Saturday salad. I’ll be able to grill what I need for both events once. What a time saver!

Holiday Fitness Tips

Take it from me…you don’t want to learn the hard way that mindless eating during the holidays can cause damage to both body and spirit. (Gaining weight does lower your spirits…doesn’t it?) To help you, and to remind myself to think before eating all the decadent foods that abound this time of year, I am posting these proven tips.

Mood Lighting Works

Lots of candles. Soft lights. These are the ingredients that can help create a mood, especially for a night of romance. But forget romance! At my age and after 29 years of marriage, mood lighting wouldn’t help unless both my husband and I agree to a little romance and both of us are in a sexy mood, which doesn’t happen often! About the only time I need mood lighting is when I entertain. I need the dim lighting to disguise all those spots that my cleaning tools didn’t reach.
